How do short impact videos help a nonprofit keep its donors?

What would your donors look like if you shared powerful stories with them every quarter, or even every month?

A young woman with her hair pulled back smiles as she talks, seen from the side in front of a stone fireplace.

Donor communication is one of the hardest things nonprofits wrestle with.

If you're stuck with one-time gifts, campaigns that fall flat, or the sense that you're leaving money on the table, you're not alone.

That's why I want to talk about impact videos for nonprofits. These short, two-minute updates can reshape how donors see your nonprofit. They're not fluff. Done right, they build trust and they inspire generosity.

1. What is an impact video?

Impact videos (we often call them Impact Updates) are short, two-minute stories you send to your donors that highlight the current work your nonprofit is doing.

Key word: current. These aren't five-year-old testimonials. They're fresh, relevant stories that show donors exactly what's happening because of their giving.

They're built for email and social. Long enough to tell a full story, short enough to keep attention.

2. Why do impact videos work?

Donors don't have short attention spans. They binge-watch Netflix just fine.

The difference is context. A supporter scrolling Instagram or opening an email isn't going to sit through an 8-minute montage. But a two-minute Impact Update? Perfect.

It's digestible, it's engaging, and it fits their day. And because it's a story, with a problem and a solution, it actually sticks.

3. How do you pick the right story?

Here's the framework I use:

  • It should be compelling. If it doesn't move you, it won't move donors.
  • It should align with your mission. If you feed families in DC, don't tell a story about rescuing a cat in Baltimore.
  • It should have a real problem to solve. People care about the drama and the resolution.
  • Your org should play a role. You don't need to be the hero, but you should be part of the story.

Get those four right and your Impact Update will land.

4. Impact videos build donor trust

Most donors give because they're moved in the moment. But they stay because they consistently see the results.

Impact videos separate "who you are" from "what you do." Instead of just selling your mission, they show the tangible outcomes of your work.

Consistently sharing updates signals:

  • We're active.
  • We're effective.
  • Your money is making a difference.

That builds confidence. And confidence turns casual givers into lifelong givers. That's why impact videos aren't just storytelling tools, they're fundraising multipliers.

5. How can you start right now?

If this feels overwhelming, here's a simple starter plan:

  1. Select your story. What do donors want to hear this month?
  2. Pick your cadence. Quarterly for smaller orgs, monthly if you have more bandwidth.
  3. Shoot and release. Keep it under two minutes, start with the problem, highlight the people, close with the solution.

That's it. Repeat the cycle. Don't let perfect stop you from consistent.

Here is the short version

Impact videos are short, current, story-driven updates that make donors proud and keep them close.

So here's my question for you: how often are you sharing stories with your donors, and how consistent are you at it?
